[Guide] What is Damage Reduction & How It works™?
(Updated September 2015)
Many new/intermediate players have questions about damage reduction and how it actually works.
So in this guide, I will discuss about the concepts regarding damage reduction.
1) What is Damage Reduction?
2) Common Q&As
3) How do we calculate damage reduction?
Feel free to ask any questions that you might have which I will include into the Q&As.
What is Damage Reduction?
Damage reduction is a stat of your player that reduces damage dealt to him/her via enemy steal, shot or penetration.
How does it work?
On a very simple basis, if you have 100% damage reduction and enemy player has 0% penetration power, your player will take 1 damage from any steal, shot or penetration.
However, if enemy player has >0% penetration power, then it becomes complicated.
Because the equations involving the relationship between penetration power and damage reduction have not been officially released.
Common Q&A (s)
QN: Why doesn't my player get 100% damage reduction despite the addition of his passives/spirit stones/in line buffs > 100% damage reduction
Answer:
QN: How high of a damage reduction do I need for my goalkeeper?
Answer:
How do we calculate Damage Reduction?
Damage Reduction are calculated in a multiplicative manner, not additive.
This means that you do not add the damage reduction values from passives/spirit stones up, using addition.
For example: 20% + 30% + 60% etc.
Else you might be puzzled why your GK is not getting 110% damage reduction etc.
A multiplicative manner of calculating damage reduction simply means:
You apply one value to the damage reduced first, followed by the next value and so on.
For example, if your goalkeeper has 20%, 30% and 60% damage reduction from different sources (passives/spirit stones etc)
However, what we do not know, is the sequence or priority of applying the damage reduction.
The priority is important as if you do the maths, you will see that it results in different final values if you apply them in different orders.
The difference is negligible so, do not worry about it.
One thing to note here is, damage reduction provided by defense is not included or shown on your player stat screen.

- However, a reddit guy came up with an empirical analysis of the relationship.

Common Q&A (s)
QN: Why doesn't my player get 100% damage reduction despite the addition of his passives/spirit stones/in line buffs > 100% damage reduction
Answer:
Please refer to the below regarding damage reduction calculations.
QN: How high of a damage reduction do I need for my goalkeeper?
Answer:
From endgame PvP, even at >90% damage reduction after active block is applied, strikers with 100% penetration power are still able to do ~2000 crited damage to your GK. This is not inclusive of buffs from elaine, which could result in higher shot damage.
Hence, a damage reduction of 70% to 90% is decent.
It is better to increase the critical resistance and HP of your GK to resist OHKO.
How do we calculate Damage Reduction?

This means that you do not add the damage reduction values from passives/spirit stones up, using addition.
For example: 20% + 30% + 60% etc.
Else you might be puzzled why your GK is not getting 110% damage reduction etc.
A multiplicative manner of calculating damage reduction simply means:
You apply one value to the damage reduced first, followed by the next value and so on.
For example, if your goalkeeper has 20%, 30% and 60% damage reduction from different sources (passives/spirit stones etc)
- First, you apply the 20% damage reduction on the 100% damage taken.
So your goalkeeper takes 80% damage and has 20% damage reduction. - Second, you apply the 30% damage reduction on the 80% damage taken.
So your goalkeeper takes 56% damage and has 44% damage reduction.
As observed, this is lower/different from the 50% damage reduction if you were to add them up additively. - Third, you apply the 60% damage reduction to the 56% damage taken.
So your goalkeeper takes 22.4% damage and has 77.6% damage reduction.
As observed, this is lower/different from the 110% damage reduction if you were to add them up additively.
However, what we do not know, is the sequence or priority of applying the damage reduction.
The priority is important as if you do the maths, you will see that it results in different final values if you apply them in different orders.
The difference is negligible so, do not worry about it.
