[Guide] What is Penetration Power & How It works™?
(Updated March 2016)
Many new/intermediate players have questions about penetration power and how it actually works.
So in this guide, I will discuss the relationships between damage reduction, penetration power and your shot damage.
1) What is Penetration Power?
2) Types of damage reduction and how they work
3) Post Major-Patch Changes
4) Common Q&As
5) Relationships between Penetration Power, Damage Reduction, Defense & Shot Damage
Feel free to ask any questions that you might have which I will include into the Q&As.
What is Penetration Power?

Relationships between Penetration Power, Damage Reduction, Defense & Shot Damage
One thing to note here is, defense do provide damage reduction that is not included/shown at the player stats screen.
On reddit, one guy has done a graphical/empirical relationship analysis of penetration power, damage reduction and your shot damage.
Well, I am not a mathematical person and I do not really use the tables.
However, I do observe the 100% penetration table which relates to my striker and find it to be rather accurate.

What is Penetration Power?
Penetration power is a stat of your player in Soccer Spirits.
What does it do?
It increases the damage done by your player, which is reduced by opposing player damage reduction stat.
- This means that if the opposing player has a damage reduction of 100%.
If your player has 0% penetration power, your player will do 1 damage.
This is because his damage is reduced by enemy player's damage reduction stat. - So if your player has >0% penetration power, he will then be able to do > 1 damage, to a player with 100% damage reduction.
- This works the same way for penetration and shoot/active shoot.
Maximum Penetration Power of any player is 100%. You cant increase beyond 100%.
Types of Damage Reduction and how they work
There are 4 main types of damage reduction:
Post Major-Patch Changes
Before Patch:
At 100% Penetration Power, the effectiveness of damage reduction and defense is reduced by 50%.
After Patch:
At 100% Penetration Power, the effectiveness of damage reduction is reduced by 50%.
Results/Consequences:
Striker Damage is reduced by 15% ~ 20% post-patch due to penetration power no longer affecting defense.
The damage will vary based on enemy goakeeper defense.
Types of Damage Reduction and how they work
There are 4 main types of damage reduction:
- Damage Reduction
The value is shown on the stat screen and is applied to the damage calculation equation, together with penetration power. - Defense
The mechanics of this stat is not fully understood yet at the moment.
It is simply known that it reduces damage but the equations of how it works is uncertain. - Elemental Advantages & Disadvantages
Dark > Ardor > Whirlwind > Thunder > Light > Dark
Elemental Advantage will allow you to deal 25% more damage
Elemental Disadvantage will cause you to take 25% more damage - Elemental Damage Reduction Totems
For example, Chitose/Nerua/Magnus/Death Queen/Patricia
These totems do not stack; the highest value in the line will apply
Post Major-Patch Changes
Before Patch:
At 100% Penetration Power, the effectiveness of damage reduction and defense is reduced by 50%.
- Damage reduction via elemental advantage is not affected by penetration power.
- Damage reduction via elemental damage reduction totem is not affected by penetration power.
After Patch:
At 100% Penetration Power, the effectiveness of damage reduction is reduced by 50%.
- Damage reduction via defense is not affected by penetration power.
- Damage reduction via elemental advantage is not affected by penetration power.
- Damage reduction via elemental damage reduction totem is not affected by penetration power.
Results/Consequences:
Striker Damage is reduced by 15% ~ 20% post-patch due to penetration power no longer affecting defense.
Common Q&A (s)
QN: How do I increase the Penetration Power of my player?
Answer:
Penetration Power can only be increased via player passives, spirit stones (main/sub stat), totems (in-line buff) or active pass.
You have to read your player passives, check spirit stones and find in line buffers to see if your striker can reach 100% penetration power.
Example of penetration power totem: Silla.
QN: Should I increase penetration power of my striker/player?
Answer:
For PvP, its recommended to increase the penetration power of your striker.
Penetration Power is usually not necessary for attackers/leaders/defenders as non goalkeepers usually have little damage reduction.
QN: How much penetration power should I stack on my striker?
Answer:
For PvP, 100% or as high as possible.
For PvE, it depends on what you are dealing with.
For example, how much damage reduction that the goalkeeper you are trying to beat has?
QN: Does Increasing Penetration Power increase the shot damage of your striker?
Answer:
No, as mentioned above, it reduces the amount of shot damage reduced by enemy GK damage reduction stat.
It does appear to make your shot damage higher as compared to a striker with 0% penetration when the enemy GK has high damage reduction.
QN: Does Penetration Power increase damage dealt when goalkeeper blocks?
Answer:
Goalkeeper block instantaneously increase his damage reduction stat which is included in the penetration power equation.
So yes, with penetration power, you will do more damage to goalkeeper when they use block active.

However, I do observe the 100% penetration table which relates to my striker and find it to be rather accurate.
- To be able to determine your striker shot damage from the graph, you will need to know your striker maximum shot damage.
- This can be assessed via doing active pass > active shot combo on story mode 1-1 to the goalkeeper.
That can be used as a reference to your maximum shot damage.
