Developer's Concept Art Note - October 2018 Soccer Spirits
soccerspirits.wikia.com/wiki/Developer%27s_Note_-_October_2018
Greetings from Com2uS!
Hi, I’m a hairy developer. (You might know me from the April Fool's match.)
Since the developer’s notes are always focused on the direction of the game development, we rarely have a chance to talk about artistic areas, such as illustration work.
I’d like to write about the concept planning for the first time, because I believe the illustration is a very important part of Soccer Spirits, and assume there are many users who’d like to know more about it.
Let’s start with one of the newest 5★ Player, Curod.
As BigBall, we usually build our characters using the following procedure:
Character concept planning > "Rough" process > Dubbing process > Completion of character
*"Rough" process meaning general concept art from the artist based on the character concept details given
Sometimes, however, the rough process and dubbing process are reversed due to the schedule/availability of the voice actors, and in this case, the dubbed voice greatly influences the direction of the rough character development.
Curod is a player that was built from the second procedure.
Ji-hun Choi, who plays Kirin, Skorn, Phil and others, did a great job of dubbing the cranky Curod. Moreover, SR had just finished Belial's Extreme Evolution artwork so nicely that we felt her to be the right person for Curod, and commissioned the artist. While other artists are great at their work, SR is highly professional, working on additional details based on the concept plans to polish the characters toward perfection.
Upon receiving the concept plan of the player, SR wanted to ask SINBARU to work on the concept artwork first, so she could work on the illustration work based on SINBARU's artwork for maximum quality.
After discussing the details with SR, as she desired, the detailed concept artwork was decided to be done by SINBARU. We decided to use the name GRANPOLOS as the artist, as it was their team name.
Usually, there is no designated process on detailed concept artwork, so this was a memorable case due to the unusual process.
Let's take a look at the work of SR and SINBARU!
<Original artwork of Curod (Normal/Evolved) produced by SINBARU>
Left:
Curod's earrings. I don't know what it is really, but it ended up looking like the pin of a grenade. I'm not sure...
Right:
Shark boots. Like the teeth of a devil or the scales of a dragon. Its strength lies in running forward quickly. It uses friction to speed up and then slide. To break, you use your feet. There's a strong recoil and blue flames rise out.
<First rough artwork of Curod produced by SR>
<The first rough artwork seemed less cranky than we asked in the concept plan, so we asked for a new rough work. It was this artwork that was finally confirmed.>
<Original artwork of Extreme Evolved Curod produced by SINBARU>
Top:
Kurod (Chinese: Extreme Evolution) 20180709 SINBARU
Middle:
You calling me a devil? What're you looking at.
<Original artwork of Curod's extreme evolution produced by SR. SR successfully completed the work on based on the concept plan and the concept artwork.>
Since it's the first time we've had developer's notes like this, please let us know your thoughts on this type of content~
